A clinical observation of 126 intestinal obstruction

Abstract
The materials in this report were made 126 cases of patient with the intestinal obstruction which -were treated surgically at the Ewha Womans University Hospital during 8 years from Janury 1963 to September 1971.
1. The most common causes of the intestinal obstruction were postoperative adhesion (45.0%); intussusception (32.8%) and external hernia (9. 5%).
2. In age distribution; 32 cases (25. 4%) were observed under 1 year of age. The 60% of cases -were included in the 0^10 and 21^30 year old group and 68 cases (52.4%) occured in male anal 58 cases (47. 6%) in female with ratio of 1. 2 : 1.
3. The cardinal symptomes and signs were abdominal pain (34%), vomiting (33%) and abdominal distention (18%). Physical examination revealed that more than 50% of, all cases showed abdominal tenderness or distention.
4. In two-third of cases, Jeukocytosis (above 10, 000/mm3) was revealed.
5. A majority of all cases (46%) was seen at this department after 72 hours onset of initial symptomes.
6. As for the operative fashion; 70 cases (75%) were treated by operative release of obstruction -with operative decompression, 17 cases (20%) by primary intestinal resection.
7. The mortality was 11 cases (8.7%). The most frequent cause of death was septic shock.
